7 Steps to a Perfect Lawn

1) Set the soil! This is the most commonly skipped step in lawn care. In order to properly set soil you must dig roughly six inches into the ground to test the Ph of the soil and add the new soil into the old. In order to do that you must clear the area including the roots and weeds before beginning this process. Gardeners agree that the best way to grow a beautiful lawn is to lay the ground work for the seeds to grow in.

2) Choosing what type of grass to use. You have two options, a carpet of sod or seeding by hand. Carpets can get expensive but they are easier and less time-consuming than laying out the seeds by hand. Once you are able to choose between the two you are on your way to a perfect lawn.

3) Mowing correctly! Most people cut their grass too short. If the grass is cut too low to the roots it will struggle to survive and keep nutrients it needs to survive. In order to avoid this readjust your mower to a higher setting. Paul James, a Master gardener and host of his own television show recommends that you raise your mower to the highest notch so that you are only mowing the top part of your grass.

4) Water and feed your grass! The saying “less is more” does not apply in this case. Grass needs food and water to grow in its early stages. It should be watered at least twice a week.

5) Keep weeds out! Unfortunately, weeds will always grow in lawns. There are several fast acting weed killing sprays that are on the market today. Or you can get your hands a little bit dirty and pull the weeds as they appear.

6) Poke holes in your grass for circulation! This will help to let the oxygen and nutrients reach all the densely packed soil underneath.

7) Keep up with everyday maintenance! Lawn care is at your discretion. Not all grass will grow evenly, some spots will receive more sunlight thus needing more water and grow quickly while other spots will grow slowly and need less maintenance.
